JOB SUMMARY: The Monitoring Technician is responsible for on-going surveillance of patient cardiac monitors and provides RNs and/or clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph Hospital.

2. Follows the St. Joseph Medical Center Guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).

3. Promotes a culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.

4. Supportive of the compliance program set forth by IASIS and demonstrated by:

  1. Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance.
  2. Adheres to dealing appropriately and fairly with employee conduct.
  3. Enforces all compliance policies as they pertain to his/her area.
  4. Provides and assures timely compliance education as requested by the Regional Compliance & Safety Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.

5. Maintains ongoing, high-level surveillance of patients cardiac rhythms and notifies nursing/clinicians of any rate/rhythm changes according to clinician/provider orders.

6. Measures and interprets patients heart rhythm and documents on patient record per departmental standards.

7. Performs clerical duties related to admission, discharge, and documentation of patient information from Central Telemetry.

8. Answers telephone and communicates clearly when receiving information from units or providers. Uses clear and complete communication with unit personnel when delivering information about changes in patient rhythm.

9. Orients and mentors new staff members. Serves as a resource for training and troubleshooting for Central Telemetry and clinical areas.

10. Troubleshoots monitors with nursing staff and contacts Clinical Engineering as appropriate.

11. Gives report to oncoming shift.

12. Maintains and stocks all designated equipment, including telemetry, and transport monitors.

13. Replaces defective equipment and reports failures to Clinical Engineering or designated contact service for affected system.

14. Develops a rapport and cooperative relationship with nursing and clinical staff and responds to questions/requests from healthcare providers.

15. Performs other duties as requested.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Knowledge of basic anatomy/physiology of the heart. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, clinicians, and the general public. Ability to work under moderate pressure for extended periods of time. Ability to accept responsibility for accuracy and response times to emergent and non-emergent requests. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

WORK EXPERIENCE: One year experience monitoring ECG/ Dysrhythmia in a physician's office, clinic, hospital or similar setting required.

LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION: Possess and maintain current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health care Providers (may be completed during orientation).

EDUCATION & TRAINING: High school diploma or GED

SKILLS: Successful completion of EKG exam within fourteen calendar days of employment at SJMC.
