Summary Assesses and treats patients with speech /language/swallow and/or neurological disorders. Performs appropriate Speech Therapy evaluations; designs and implements appropriate treatment plans based on the analysis and interpretation of evaluation results. Maintain proper documentation. Reports and records all appropriate data to patients records. Contributes to the development of staff education and orientation program. Responsible for personal and professional development. Participates in creating and maintaining an atmosphere which supports the SJMC mission and values. Consistently provides positive customer services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Service Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center. Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance. Administers patient care by developing and carrying out treatment plans, based on the integration and interpretation of evaluation findings concerning the patients physical, cognitive perceptual, language and swallowing skills. In doing so, observes and interviews patients, reviews medical histories including physicians diagnoses and prescriptions, and administers detailed formal and informal testing. Determines the appropriate therapeutic program and functional training; and administers or monitors the application of therapies. Instructs patients and families in the appropriate home programs. Discusses and gives appropriate assistance to patients for the continuation of rehabilitation at home. People Consistently follows patient care, and facility guidelines and procedures in performance. Collaborates with inter and intraprofessional colleagues to ensure quality outcomes. Assists with the orientation and training of new associates. Oversees the supervision of students when they provide patient care, treatment, and services as part of their training. Quality: Completes annual education requirements. Maintains competency, as evidenced by completion of competency validation requirements. Promotes of a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices. Uses professional judgment and critical thinking to prepare, prioritize, and execute the patients plan of care consistent with patient assessment data, physicians treatment plans, and professional standards of care. Implements measures to prevent exposure to infectious pathogens and communicable conditions. Identifies risks and hazards to patients through various risk assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm. Assists in the development of the Speech Pathology program in areas such as communication/ cognitive/ swallow and/or neurological disorders. Maintains appropriate patients records on a regular basis including evaluations, progress notes, discharge summaries, daily work sheets; and communicates with other team members; and ensures that documentation is charted appropriately. Sets an example to all staff in their daily activities. Other duties as assigned. Growth: Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments. Enhances the patient experience by fostering a positive relationship with customers. Contributes to improving patient satisfaction results. Participates in activities of the department, such as in-services, hospital conferences and research projects. Finance: Promotes stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality patient care. Completes manual worksheet of daily charges for service provided and enters charges in the computer, accurately and timely.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Current Texas License as a Speech Language Pathologist, and a Certificate of Clinical Competence. Requires knowledge of general policies and procedures in Speech Therapy as well as advanced skills necessary to perform professional level Speech Therapy evaluation and treatment. New graduates and experienced therapists are eligible for hire. Work requires a professional level of knowledge acquired through the completion of an accredited Masters degree program in Speech Language Pathology Technical, clerical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to patient care/area. Basic computer knowledge. Ability to use independent judgment in the planning and execution of Speech Therapy programs. Leadership abilities in order to direct the activities of support staff. Analytical and clinical skills, including knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology, and Speech Therapy treatments, in order to evaluate patients communication, cognitive and swallow status, establish therapy goals, and observe, and document, the patients condition and progress. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required. Other certification requirements as defined by the certification policy. Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. PREFERRED Bi or Multilingual
